Transportation & Public Transit

Miguel has been a consistent advocate for transit riders, cyclists, and pedestrians. He and his partner, Luis, are proud to be one of the many Ward 1 households that are car-free. As a result, Miguel knows firsthand the strengths — and shortcomings — of the system. Gaps in safety and connectivity for people walking, biking, and rolling still exist, and transit frequency and reliability are far from their full potential. Miguel also knows that many of our neighbors are car-free not by choice, but out of economic necessity, and that we must make alternatives to driving work better for the people who need it most. He will build on our strengths and double down on opportunities with a commitment to making Ward 1’s streets and public spaces safer, more efficient, and more welcoming for everyone — no matter their age, ability, or mode of transportation.

Ward 1 is already one of the District’s most connected and transit‑rich areas, benefiting from sustained investments in Metrorail and Metrobus service, walkable streets, and bicycle infrastructure. But the status quo is not good enough. Properly maintained sidewalks, safer bike lanes, and more frequent public transit not only connect people to jobs and opportunities; they also work towards achieving the District’s climate, sustainability, equity, and affordability goals. As Councilmember, Miguel will work to expand resources, funding, staffing, and efficiency at the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), unlocking the agency’s ability to build and maintain the types of transformational projects that Ward 1 needs and deserves.
