Miguel is the proud son of a schoolteacher. He learned so much from his mother — about the importance of showing up, about meeting people where they are, and about service that’s bigger than yourself. He saw her sacrifices of time and money to provide for her students, including buying extra supplies out of her own pocket and spending her weekends (with little Miguel in tow) taking students to academic tournaments. These experiences taught Miguel that proper compensation for teachers and robust support for teacher wellness are crucial to positive educational outcomes.

Miguel recognizes his own good fortune to have attended public schools with strong extracurricular and arts programs, and is determined to secure the same for DC’s children today. Thanks to his dedicated teachers, Miguel learned to play musical instruments, compose music, and produce plays; he loved these activities so much that, as a high schooler, he co-founded a summer theater troupe for younger children to experience the stage. (He wrote all of the original musical scores himself!) All of that was possible because of supportive teachers, school administrators, and parents.

DC’s families deserve schools that can match the dreams they have for their children. DC has one of the highest per-pupil investments in education in the country, and Miguel is proud to live in a city that prioritizes its youth. At the same time, he recognizes that more can be done to use those resources efficiently to actually support students and teachers in the classroom. As a Councilmember, Miguel is committed to pairing our investment with accountability measures to ensure that DC Public Schools (DCPS) and charter schools deliver high-quality education, that the DC Department of General Services (DGS) provides dignified spaces in which our students can learn, and that we uphold our commitment to making early childhood education accessible for all families.

Miguel has committed to conducting annual walkthroughs of every school in Ward 1, in advance of each new school year, to inspect facilities first-hand and to make himself accessible to educators and parents alike. Too many of our schools are not physically conducive to learning — and that’s squarely within the Council’s power to fix.
